With all the hype and fear going around today do you have any idea
how to achieve your dream of having a business providing you the
income and freedom you desire?  Over the next few posts I will be sharing some ideas on how to have the business you desire.

For the first step I would ask you to consider a vital point. What is it
exactly you desire to have for yourself? Are you seeking to replace
a full-time income with income from your business or are you just
looking for some additional income to alleviate debt and financial
burdens?

This is a basic point you must decide. If you don’t know what it is
you desire then how can you possibly make a plan to get it. As
Mark Twain said “Most people are about as happy as they want to
be. They just don’t know what they want.”

So today your first tip is the easiest one and at the same time the
hardest one to complete.

Take a few hours and get off by yourself. Take out your desires in
private and examine them. Make a list of everything you want to
have and then go over the list and decide for yourself which ones
are the most important to you.

A good test comes from Jack Zufelt: “Ask yourself this question, if
money was no object what would you spend your life doing? Then
rate it on a scale of 0 tp 100.” If you rate it at less than 80 you are
not likely to achieve it. Don’t use what someone else says you are
good at of need to do enter into the discussion. You MUST make
your own decisions in this area. Remember if you are not happy
doing what you do now then it is not a desire of yours. You are
seeking to find out what makes you happy and fulfills you as you
work at it. There is an old quote that goes “ do what you love and
you will never work a day in your life.”

If you really want success and wealth then you must first make your
own decisions as to what you want to do with your life.

Why would you even consider starting a home business with the economy in the shape it is in today? The answer to the question is one of many parts.

Let’s take a look at the parts and how you can benefit from having your own business.

The first benefit is an obvious one. Having a home based business
can reduce your tax bill when it comes due. All tax questions should be discussed with your tax advisor of course. With that being said consider the way your tax bill is figured. If you are an individual payer your tax is figured on your gross pay minus deductions. If you are a business owner then the costs of earning your income is deducted from the gross before you start applying the deductions available as an individual payer,

Consider the example of your car being used partially for your business. You have to keep track of how much you use the car for business through a logbook showing the mileage driven for business purposes and the costs associated with it. As a theoretical example suppose you have total car expenses for the year of $12,000 and you can prove that 40% of that cost was business related. This means you can deduct $4,800 from the gross profit of your home business before starting to figure your individual tax bill. Can you do this now?

This example along with deductions for business office expenses, utilities, supplies and phone service are costs which reduce the amount of taxes you pay.

Another part is the fact that having your own home business gives you the security that is not available working for someone else. Allow me to tell you a story about a friend of mine from New York state. He had a job for over twelve years as a salesperson for a major company. During the last 6 years he had also been quietly building a home based network marketing business. In the summer of 2008 he lost his job through downsizing of the corporation. However his income from his home business was almost $5.000 a month so he just shrugged his shoulders and started concentrating on his home business full-time. Do you have your own $5,000 a month golden parachute if your corporate job should disappear?

These two parts tax relief and security are one two punches for having your own home based business and yet there is another reason almost as big as the first two combined. Starting and growing a home based business will result in a level of personal growth which will astound you when you look back later. As Jim Rohn says “ you should set a goal to become a millionaire not for the money but for what you will become in achieving that goal.” You will develop skills and strengths you never dreamed you had or could develop. These skills and strengths will serve you all of your life and improve your life.

Another  aspect of having your own successful business is the freedom it gives you along with the ability to live a full and complete life of your choosing. As a former minister and successful network marketer said “ before when someone in my church needed help I had to beg others for the help. Now if there is a need I want to help with I just write the check.”

And last remember this “ you are either building your own dream or you are busy building someone else’s dream.” The question is which would you rather do?

In today’s world there is one critical component to achieving the success you desire in your life. The necessary component is having a mindset for success. Without the correct mindset you won’t achieve the success you desire.

So what is the correct mindset you ask?

The correct mindset begins with perseverance. Without perseverance your chances of success become a lot slimmer. Why?

Because without perseverance you won’t be willing to stand up to the many trials you will face in your journey. To understand the importance of perseverance you only have to look at some of the greatest success stories of the last 100 years.

First up is an obvious one if you have looked into the lives of successful people of this era. Everyone knows the story of Thomas A. Edison and his quest to develop the electric light bulb.  In his drive to his goal Edison tried and failed over a thousand times to develop the light bulb. When asked about the failures Edison replied “ we now know a thousand ways not to build a light bulb”

Also consider the following from Ask.com about Edison and the electric light bulb:

“Edison actually had to invent a total of seven system elements that were critical to the practical application of electric lights as an alternative to the gas lights that were prevalent in that day.

• These were the development of:

• the parallel circuit,

• a durable light bulb,

• an improved dynamo,

• the underground conductor network,

• the devices for maintaining constant voltage,

• safety fuses and insulating materials, and

• light sockets with on-off switches.

Before Edison could make his millions, every one of these elements had to be invented and then, through careful trial and error, developed into practical, reproducible components.”

With all of these obstacles would you have the perseverance to continue to work on the development of an electric light bulb? We are fortunate that Edison had the quality of perseverance in his make-up and worked through all the problems connected with the development and implementation of the electric light bulb.

What does this have to do with your success?

You have to develop the same mindsert for yourself. You have to understand there may be setbacks in your journey and you have to be willing to work through them. You must keep your eyes set on your goals and not look at the obstacles which crop up in your way sometimes daily and even sometimes minute to minute. As the quote goes “you must keep your eyes on the prize.”

When you persevere you will find that you are able to keep moving towards the goals you set for yourself. Develop the mindset for yourself and you will succeed at any goal you set.
